New Interview: Goapele Speaks On Her Favorite Hip-Hop Collaborations by Complex
"Good soul music should make you feel something in your heart, in your body and in your spirit,” says Goapele, the Oakland-based singer/songwriter who released her third album, Break of Dawn, last week. "That’s what I try to do both in the studio and on stage.” (And presumably on-screen too, since the singer recently confirmed that she'll have a role in the all-star remake of the 1976 film Sparkle, which will soon begin production.)
Sitting in the lobby of a Times Square hotel a few hours before sound check, the former Berklee College of Music student sips from a steaming cup of coffee and explains how she carved the perfect niche for herself with music that fuses jazz, soul, and boom-bap poetics.
Though Goapele cites both Al Green and Frank Ocean as soul inspirations, she also considers herself “a major hip-hop fan.” She's worked with a wide array of rappers including the Bay Area's Hieroglyphics crew, with whom she first collaborated on their single “Make Your Move” in 2003. “The first time I ever went into a real studio was with those guys,” she remembers. “The first member I met was Pep Love and we all just connected from the beginning.”
Introduced to rap when she was kid listening to her brother’s EPMD and Rakim records, Goapele has also worked with the likes of Talib Kweli, E-40 and Kayne West. “I think Talib is one of the few rappers right now saying a lot in his songs—and the tracks are great, which is usually a hard balance to find,” she says. “His songs are the kind that, when you’re driving around, they make you turn the volume up until it can’t go any higher.
“E-40 is another person I love working with, because he is so entertaining,” she continues with a smile. “He should have his own reality show. I love that he raps the same way that he talks. All you have to do is listen to him to hear how much he has influenced the vocabulary of rappers, and not just on the west coast.”
Although the Kanye collabo remains a work in progress, Goapele says she paid him a visit in Hawaii. "I was out there doing a show with Mos Def," she recalls. "Kanye and I spoke of working together and started an idea that we didn't get to finish." This was when she was just beginning the process of putting together her current album Break of Dawn. "We are still musical friends," she says of Ye, whom she first met when both were new artists. "Hopefully we'll get to work together more when the time is right."
More recently, Goapele has been in the studio with backpacker president Mos Def. “Mos is a true artist who has a story to tell and gives back through his music,” says Goapele. “He remixed my song ‘Different’ in 2005 and the song we’re working on now will be one of my future projects.”
In the future, Goapele says she's hoping to work with both D’Angelo and Stevie Wonder. “With Stevie, I’d be happy if we could just write a song together,” she says. “For me, a true collaboration is when both artists understand the true essence of the song, and pay attention to the subject matter. I don’t want to make do collaborations where it sounds as though the other person was just tacked on without a thought.”
Like her previous albums Even Closer (2002) and Change It All (2005), Break of Dawn is being distributed in conjunction with her own independent label Skyblaze, which Goapele runs with her husband and her brother. “Establishing Skyblaze allowed me to have a more direct connection with my business as well as the music,” she concludes as she heads off to soundcheck. “I like being more hands-on when it comes to my music."

Q: How would you say “Break of Dawn” is different from your previous albums?
A: “Break of Dawn,” musically, is still soulful and eclectic, but I think I opened up a little bit more vocally. It’s a little more intimate. It’s a little more sensual than before—and pensive.

Q: Of the nine tracks on” Break of Dawn,” which would you say means the most to you and why?
A: I would say “Pieces” and “Tears on My Pillow” and—you know—those are my ballads and their bluesy and sentimental for me.
A: I would say “Pieces” and “Tears on My Pillow” and—you know—those are my ballads and their bluesy and sentimental for me.
Q: What do you hope listeners take away from the new album?
A: I want people to feel inspired. I want people to feel good. I want people to feel something. I want people to strive for what they want in their life, and I want them to heal from anything that’s hurting them.
A: I want people to feel inspired. I want people to feel good. I want people to feel something. I want people to strive for what they want in their life, and I want them to heal from anything that’s hurting them.
Q: You once said, “Soul is kind of the root of the music that I do, but I want to keep redefining.” How do you go about doing that, and how do you feel about being placed into the neo-soul category?
A: I say that I do Soul, R&B music. I have so many influences from Billie Holiday, Nina Simone to Stevie Wonder and Prince and even Al Green and Bjork. And a lot of Hip Hop music has influenced me a lot—you know—De La Soul and Digital Underground and A Tribe Called Quest. So many different influences that when I’m in the studio, you know as a songwriter, I like feeling free and going with the vibe and letting the song grow as it should. Sometimes that doesn’t fit exactly into any category, so I have to keep redefining how to describe the music that I do. But I promise that it will always be soulful, because it will come from my soul.

Q: What inspired you to name the album “Break of Dawn?”
A: When I was finished recording everything and all of these songs are just glimpses of moments of different feelings and thoughts that I’ve had or different stories that are part my own and part collected that I want to tell. I wanted a title that would capture all of that and capture where I’m trying to go and I feel like the break of dawn is infinite possibilities for what that day will bring.

Q: When did you first discover that music was the path you wanted to take?
A: Well, I remember when I was in elementary school, maybe like 8 years old or something. I was around a lot of performing artists that were friends of the family and I just always felt like ‘that’s what I want to do.’ In high school I started training, singing with choirs and getting voice lessons and doing a lot of creative writing and decided that that’s really what I wanted to pursue as a career and that’s what I was going to study.

News: Mr. Jet Black Introduction by Chemical Magazine
Jevon Ward now known as Mr. Jet Black has been on the Bay Area Rap scene with some of the biggest names on the sidelines for a very long time. He first started as Mr. Ice Cold (he gave himself that name back in 1991) when he went to Hayward High School and was homies with Spice-1. Spice was a senior and Ice was a freshman; Ice used to help Spice brainstorm ideas and titles for the songs in Spice 1’s early days when Spice was first discovered by Too Short. Ice or Jevon was younger but didn’t really know how to put it all together. Back then He was a huge Ice Cube Fan and a really into the West Coast and Bay Area Raps scene. Jevon loved to write in High School and really enjoyed English; he used to read Right On Magazine and Word Up as well as every other Hip Hop publication out at that time; so it made sense that he naturally gravitate into the Hip Hop Industry. The title of Ice Cold’s 1st Rap was called “Hundred Percent Rhymes” – meaning across the board with topics. “I was still trying to make it all make sense, even to myself”. He was also High school friends with Xavier who is now Vitani the Great in 91 back then when he was 50Clip; and in 1996 he met Tyme who now goes by TykTok. These two characters come back into play later on in the story. Later on in 1991 he became a part of Righteous Records and was then called J.E.T. and his Label mate was AskariX and the name of his first EP was called “Life after Darkness”. In 1992-1993 J.E.T was now a part of Snake Pit Records out of Oakland, CA founded by Anthony Wiggins J.E.T released a song with AllfrumThaI an Inglewood Artist on Mack 10’s label at the time, but it was never released. J.E.T. has taken a hiatus within his time in the Music industry. When asked what inspires him to make music he says “I make Music for myself and if others enjoy it, then Wonderful!” In 1998/99 J.E.T. started to collaborate with more Bay Area Artist like Killa Tay, Richie Rich, C-Bo, YukMouth, Casual from the Hieroglyphics, Keiysha Cole and Nuttso from Tha Outlawz who was Nutty the Crow they are all local artist that he grew up with. Then in 1999-2002 he hooked up with Scarface records out of San Francisco, founded by Rap Artist Paris, J.E.T. had a distinguished opportunity to audition for Lyor Cohen, who was then The President of Def Jam Records, in the end it was J.E.T. vs. D.M.X. and Lyor said he loved J.E.T.’s music but he decided to go with DMX because he said DMX had a gimmick for sale “the whole dog thing”. After that he released two singles on that label and parted ways. The next label he was affiliated with was Strickly Platnum Records of Antioch, CA owned by Danny Drago that lasted for a short stint and then he rolled with Click Clack Gang & Git Paid Records from San Francisco around 2005 this is actually when J.E.T got his new name Mr. Jet Black from Messy Marv it’s a joke or play on his light skin, so now he was officially Mr. Jet Black; During this time with the Click Clack Gang & Git Paid Record label he was able to collaborate with Kurupt of the DPG of LBC, (Dogg Pound Gangstas of Long Beach). Also during this time Mr. Jet Black did some Touring being a part of the lineup for an Underground College Tour in places like Seattle, Portland, Minnesota, Minneapolis, and Lafayette, LA. He has also done Car Shows locally and in Los Angeles, as well also performed in local Clubs & Bars in The Bay Area from SF, SJ and Oakland. Mr. Jet Black has been featured in older Bay Area Publications like 4080, Rap Pages and had a song on JT Tha Bigga Figga Presents Bay Area Bosses Compilation! Now Fast Forward to 2011 Mr. Jet Black now has his own label called Hard Earned Records since around late 2005/06 and he has collaborated with the likes of other Bay Area staples like Mac Mall, PSD, Messy Marv, Guce, Killa Kiese and more. He also works closely with his affiliate label who he now does most of his collaborations with are his childhood friends who are now all apart of Armored Truck affiliated also Camarilla Boss Colony Mr. Jet Black crew. This is the Crew he feel is going to come out and take the Bay Rap scene by storm & make a difference in this music industry. Please Stay tuned for what is to come from Hard Earned Records and Mr. Jet Black in February 2012 Mr. Jet Black drops “International Grinding”.

New Interview: Kreayshawn With Oyster Magazine
Jason Crombie with Oyster Magazine connects with Kreayshawn and interviews her about her quick rise to fame and other interesting things
In the lift on my way to the Columbia Records artists’ lounge in New York, I try to predict how grumpy 21-year-old Kreayshawn is going to be. Sure, she recently signed a million-dollar record deal, but she receives an almost-daily lauding/shredding from the press, and has already been interviewed about 25 times today. I’m last off the rank and I’m predicting glazed-over eyes; bland, pull-string answers; and maybe even a walk-out. Fortunately for you, dear readers, that was not the case. She’s adorable! How can such a sweetheart withstand the soul-crushing, nerve-wracking, day-to-day horrors of the music industry? Well, you don’t grow up broke in Oakland without developing a quick wit and a thick skin. So, whether you like Kreayshawn’s music or not, it doesn’t matter — she’s got swag and it’s pumping out of her ovaries.
Jason Crombie: Do I have to call you Kreayshawn, or can I call you Kreay?
Kreayshawn: You can call me Kreay.
Kreayshawn: You can call me Kreay.
What’s your real name? Or should I not ask that…
Natassia. It’s everywhere; it doesn’t matter. I tried to keep my last name a secret but it got out there, so whatever.

I’ve always been building up an internet presence — directing music videos for local artists…
You studied film, right?
Yeah, but I’ve always had content and, like I said, I’m talkative — always been on Ustream playing my organ, y’know? Weird stuff like that. So, I always had, like, little fans growing. Then, when something big happened — when we put out ‘Gucci Gucci’ — it was kinda like I had all these people to help me spread by word-of-mouth. Next thing you know, within four days…

So, almost three months ago. How has your life changed since?
It’s been crazy. It’s just been non-stop press and radio promo and just getting my name out there and, you know, the publicists making sure I’m talking to everyone all the time.

You must be exhausted.
Yeah, kinda.
Yeah, kinda.
You’ve gone from doing your own thing to, like, boom — now it’s a business.
Yeah, I think that’s the hardest part, because I went from making my own rules to like… Well, I’m not being told what to wear or what sort of music I have to make, or what to say, but I am being told, “You gotta be here on this day, at this time.” So, it’s just like having a new job.

News: Dropbox Aims to Solidify Its Place With Businesses
Perhaps it should not have surprised corporate information technology departments that employees would use Dropbox, a service for easily sharing files among different devices by storing them in “the cloud.” But that did not mean they loved the idea of confidential files on a service they could not control.
Now Dropbox is trying to appease them by selling a service for businesses, Dropbox for Teams, introduced Thursday.
Add Dropbox to the list of consumer technologies that have infiltrated the workplace, like iPhones, Gmail and Skype.
“With the ability of people to get what they want to get done with stuff they pay for themselves, the whole role of I.T. changes,” said Ted Schadler, a workplace analyst at Forrester Research. “Dropbox is just the latest example.”
Still, the service has a way to go before large companies adopt it, Mr. Schadler said, “because it doesn’t have as much security and administration as they want.”
For Dropbox, one of the darlings of Silicon Valley with a reported $4 billion valuation from venture capitalists, its new service is a bid to buy paying customers and solidify its foothold in the growing file-sharing business..
It is competing with big companies like Google, Apple and Amazon.com, which offer increasingly sophisticated ways to store, share and sync files, and smaller ones like Box.net, YouSendIt and SugarSync. This month, Citrix Systems bought ShareFile and Research in Motion bought NewBay, both cloud storage services.
Dropbox allows people to access files, like documents, photos and music, on any device wherever they are, without pesky zip files or hulking e-mail attachments. As people edit files, Dropbox updates them so a single file is available on all devices. Most people use it free and can pay for additional storage.
Dropbox, which started in 2007, has 45 million users who save more than two billion files each week. But it has scared some people, too. In June, a security breach left Dropbox accounts accessible for several hours, and a complaint filed with the Federal Trade Commission says Dropbox misled users about privacy.
Dropbox says it uses the same security measures as banks. Files are encrypted and Dropbox restricts its employees’ access to files. But security is only as good as a user’s password. Dropbox said it is working on two-step authentication, so people would enter a second password sent to their phone, for instance.
“These are all things we take very, very seriously because our reputation and the confidence and trust people have in Dropbox is what we’ll succeed by,” said ChenLi Wang, team leader for business and sales.
Millions already sign up with their work e-mail addresses and the company estimates that at least a million businesses use the service.
Dropbox for Teams, which starts at $795 annually for five users, has 1,000 gigabytes of storage and phone customer support, and gives I.T. departments control over adding and removing users.
SusieCakes, a California bakery chain, has been testing Dropbox for Teams to share petty cash reports in real time and to exchange documents with outside lawyers. The service is easier to use than options like Microsoft’s file-sharing service, called Windows Live SkyDrive, said Houston Striggow, SusieCakes’ co-founder.
“It’s really proven for us to be a powerful business tool that’s made us a lot more efficient and productive,” he said.
But Mr. Schadler, the analyst, said that before it would get widespread business adoption, Dropbox needed features like security controls to automatically stop people from sharing confidential documents or to put files on home computers on legal hold. Dropbox says it is working on new features, including extra security measures and collaboration tools.
Of Dropbox’s competitors, Box.net has made the most headway in businesses, Mr. Schadler said.
Google is also going after businesses with tools like Google Docs, which lets employees collaborate on the same version of a document, and Chromebooks, laptops that store everything online so people can access it from any computer. The company is rumored to be introducing a file-sharing service.
Sujay Jaswa, Dropbox’s vice president of business development and sales, said its service had an advantage over big companies because it enabled iPads, Android phones and P.C.s to work together.
“You need a company like us that doesn’t have a horse in the race to be there for consumers,” he said.

News: Celly Cel Set To Release Street-Lit Novel
Celly Cel, blazed on the scene in the late 90s with hip-hop heavyweight, E-40. His underground success was a key factor in helping Sick Wid It records, ink a major label deal with Jive. His album "Killa Kali" reached high as #4 on Billboard Top 100 R&B charts, solidifying his place in the rap game.
Celly Cel was first introduced to Street-Lit through Donald Goines, during a brief stint in county jail. After a few pages of White Man's Justice, Black Man's Grief, he was hooked. He read every Donald Goines book he could get his hands on. At this point, the only outlet for this true-to-life genre was jail or the prison system, so a career as an author was hard to fathom.
Thanks to blood, sweat, and tears from self-published authors, Street-Lit found an audience, made its way into mainstream bookstores, and took off. Once the opportunity presented itself, Celly Cel took notice. His passion and flair for storytelling, combined with real-life experiences in the streets, drove him to pen his first novel, BIG FACES.
