New Interview: Lil B Speaks With Karmaloop
Oh my god… Karma-woop-woop got up with Lil B on Monday night following an epic performance at the Middle East. This was – by far – one of the wildest hip hop shows we have ever witnessed, from hardcore dudes jumping off stage and moshing to girls jumping on stage and tearing their clothes off to… uh, other stuff we will just leave up to your own twisted, based imaginations.
Shouts to Ian Velez for holding down the interview, Carissa Rossi for policing back stage and Liz Bowen for snapping the flicks. Now hurry up and read this before Lil B fucks your bitch…
I grew up in the Bay Area, man, so I gotta know who some of your main influences were.
Man… uh, Mac Dre, E-40, Yukmouth, Too $hort, Messy Marv, The Team, Hood Stars, Babyface Assasins, you know The Pack… now I got DB Tha General, Lil Curt, man… who else we got from the Bay?
We got a lot of talent in the Bay!
Hell yeah, San Quinn, Juice, Keak da Sneak, PSD… Roach Gigz goes hard now for sure. Shouts out go to the new Bay, got that new song on the radio, I see it.
Now that leads to the next question; do you feel like a lot of fans and industry people ignore the Bay Area?
Nah… well, yeah, it’s just a rough industry. You know, I’ve been watching the game for a long time as well as being a part of the industry, getting signed when I was like 15 or 16 with The Pack – shouts out to Wolf Pack, man. I see it’s only like a hand-picked few people [from the Bay Area] that are let in, you know? Only a few get in, it’s a real rough field, you know, it’s a real rough battlefield and you just gotta stay positive. It’s not easy, it’s really hard to get people to like [your music].
I really respect you for doing your thing, and that’s exactly why a lot of people follow the whole Based movement. Are there any particular artists from the Bay Area who you want to work with?
You know, I’m about to be rockin’ soon with E-40, definitely me and Too $hort. I’m going to reach out to Keak Da Sneak. You know I already did some stuff with Messy Marv, I already got Marv on the “Pretty Bitch” remix. Shouts out to your boy Too $hort from the Bay doing his thing, he’s been an influence. Just really, those are the people right now. I wanna work with DB Tha General. Shouts out to Stunnaman, Lil Uno, Young L, we about to be keepin’ it going. Just trying to keep the Bay all love. Lil B, I’m on top of it man, number one unsigned artist in the world. You see people signing three million dollar deals, you know, when I sign my deal all the money is going to me [laughs].
Carissa: I’m Jealous!
Yeah, thank you [laughs].
Carissa: Now, what’s going on lately with Kreyshawn, she use to film your music videos…
Yeah, you know, shouts out to Kreyshawn and D-Nasty. On the real, they’re doing their thing, they deserve to get that money and they deserve to do what they’re doing. I gave Kreyshawn a chance and let her rock with me and I put her on with me. I opened so many doors… once you rock with Lil B you see the doors open, Complex and all that, and she got that love. You know, she’s talented in her own way and she took a lot of pages out of my book just being around me. Just being around Lil B, you know, you’re gonna get the game, you’re gonna come out a legend, so… I mean, she was lucky, and there were some personal things where I really had to fall back from her, our personalities and stuff, but I got nothing but love. And I know her situation, so she’s doing great. Maybe I’ll have her open up for me or something [laughs].
Explain to me the message behind the Vans, how long have you been rockin’ those stinky motherfuckers?
Love, man. I’ve been rockin’ these for years, man. This has been my goal, to not change my pair of shoes ’til I get a million dollars. These shoes are about to fall apart from the inside, I can feel ‘em.
Carissa: We brought you some duct tape.
[laughs] It’s like I’m walking on high heels, but you know, it keeps me humble. It keeps me focused. It’s really a metaphor to all the people that you don’t have to worry about the norm or dressing, you can just be yourself and still be loved, I want people to love me for me. I haven’t changed my pants, wear the same ones every day. I haven’t changed my pants or my shoes and I sell out worldwide, ladies love me. Shouts out to Karmaloop!
What’s coming up for 2012?
2012 is about to be real big. I’m gonna be doing a lot more producing for artists. My real first album is gonna come out! A lot of people thought the I’m Gay mixtape was an album, but that was a mixtape… everything I’ve dropped has been a mixtape so far, but you know, it’s original material. When Lil B’s first album comes out, it’s going to be worldwide. Huge. I got a lot of tricks up my sleeve, I mean, I got a record with one of the biggest artists from New York coming out… no one will ever guess who or believe me when I tell ‘em.
When’s that gonna drop?
Soon. We’re suppose to be getting into the studio soon, but it’s there. I don’t know if you guys can handle it…
Getting back to that I’m Gay mixtape, people were talking really crazy…
Well, you know, I’m glad I’ve been through so many situations in my career and in my life…
Carissa: You were all on CNBC and shit.
We rock with CNN, shouts out to CNN [laughs]! The whole media rock with me, TMZ, everything. But, uh… I just don’t fear anybody. I come about bringing peace and unity, I want the whole next generation of kids to grow up comfortable in their own skin. You know, race is being comfortable in your own skin. A lot of people are stuck in their old ways, so I just want to show kids that there are no more mental barriers. Me personally, there were a lot of things that I used to have to think about. There were so many things that held me back mentally that now, I don’t worry about anything. I’m really free, I just want everyone to feel how I feel and not be scared.
I was watching this thing on WorldStar, and it said I inspired this guy to wear lipstick and wear tights… the thing is, I’m not a homosexual, nor am I bisexual, I really love women, to the fullest extent, but I feel like if you’re a heterosexual man, you should be able to watch that and not be offended by that. When I see stuff like that, that’s his style. Let him be. If he has a girlfriend, let him be, if he doesn’t have a girlfriend, that’s more for us, you know? It’s love regardless.
Last question, this is it – what’s your favorite meal to cook for the ladies?
My favorite meal to cook for the ladies… would have to be Based God Mignon, and that’s my very delicate meal that I will be previewing soon to the world. It’s a filet and it’s very rare and very exclusive and it’s very expensive. And I make it myself.
